Most of the trails listed here are pretty moderate. The fourteeners are,
by far, the most challenging. We have hiked all of these trails with
kids on our backs (except the fourteeners).

Some of our favorites are:

Chief Mountain Trail

Bergen Peak Trail

Silver Dollar Lake Trail

Old Ski Run Trail

Eagle’s View Trail
Three Mile Creek Trail
Kenosh Pass – Colorado Trail

I think that any hiking is going to be good training!

I am so happy I found this sight. I am a beginner hiker and have dreams of doing beirstst this July. I need to find training trails that are safe enough to bring my babies in packs

Rampart & hwy 67 gate is open as of May1st.

There is great hiking about .5 miles west of hwy 67 and rampart range road, it’s called indian creek campground. Beautiful 5′ ferns in the summer and some great wildflowers. From DH I would say it is about 11 miles north.

We do this hike twice a week. The trail has been clear of snow for quite some time now.

Hi Sarah
I have a one recommendation for you taking into account your situation:

St Mary’s Glacier (a 30 minute drive from Golden, breathtaking scenery, short hike 1 mile roundtrip, trail is not steep.
Go early on a weekend to avoid crowds or go on a weekday. See all the details at this link.

Another, not as grand as St Mary’s Glacier, is Meadow View Trail at Elk Meadow Open Space Park http://funcoloradohikes.com/elk_meadow.html.

We were up there a couple weeks ago and the snow is mostly melted. And Chief Mtn. Trail is open all year.
The road (CO 103) is open and clear.

If you want to check on the road conditions in the future, check http://www.cotrip.org/home.htm . All road closures are listed on that page. As you can see, CO Hwy 103 is not listed at this time.

Do you know how I can find info on whether the road to this hike is open or not? I looked on CDOT, but don’t see they talk about this road.
