Mt. Sherman Still Has Snow June ’09

Trail Through Snowfield on Sherman

Trail Through Snowfield on Sherman (Photo July 2005)

Wanted to hike Mt Sherman with my two sons this weekend (Father’s Day, June 21). I posted on fourteeners.com and summitpost.com to ask about conditions up there.  I got a response and found out that there is still a significant amount of snow up there – we don’t have the gear for hiking through snow, so we’ll try that fourteener in August!

Raccoon Trail Hike in Colorado’s Golden Gate Canyon Park

State Parks Hat

Whether visiting Colorado for the first time or living here year-round, the hikes near Denver never get old! Visit a new trail or hike an old favorite. One of our favorites in Golden Gate Canyon Sate Park is Raccoon Trail (through trees and some meadow; 2.5 mile loop with views from Panorama Point; easy enough for the kids).  The park also offers really good camping for families – I prefer Aspen Meadow campsite area because it is less crowded and is tents-only .

Rim Rock Trail – Hiking in Castlewood Canyon – Colorado State Parks Pass

One nice hike with good views from the top of the canyon is Rim Rock Trail. This hike is in Castlewood Canyon State Park (south of Parker). Rim Rock trail is accessible from both the west and east entrances.

Visit all of Colorado’s state parks this summer and enjoy some fantastic hiking! Great for family hikes near Denver. We like to hike Barr Lake State Park, Golden Gate Canyon State Park and Castlewood Canyon State Park best of all. These are close to Denver and are great for the kids! Buy a parks pass here.

Looking For Someone To Hike A Fourteener With?

Top of Mt Sherman 14,036 FT

A couple years ago I started climbing 14ers. My wife and kids were not up for that kind of hiking and I didn’t want to go it alone. I found SummitPost.org to be a great place to find local people to hike with. You can go on the website anytime and find other hiking enthusiasts who are willing to hike with you (some of them are very experienced). It’s also a good site to find out what the conditions are on various mountains.

So if you want to get into the higher peaks and start hiking some of Colorado’s georgeous fourteen thousand foot peaks, sign up on summit post and then go to “plans and partners” area.
Happy hiking!

Congratulations to our Nurse Practitioner (Cindy Cain) from the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes in Denver. She is not only a great caregiver to our 8-year-old son who has type 1 diabetes, she is also a champion snowshoer winning first in her division! Go Cindy! See you on the trails!

Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park Lodging

Mary's Lake LodgeWe recently stayed a couple days in Estes Park and hiked in the park. We found one of Estes Park’s hidden wonders: Mary’s Lake Lodge. We highly recommend this place if you are staying the night.  With a long history of accomodating park visitors, it still has charm and a lot of comfort. The condos are modernly furnished, the pool is inviting, and the restaurants offer a nice ambiance. We are sure to return there again! Check it out!

Memorial Day Weekend Hiking Wet and Soggy and Cold!

We had planned a 4 day weekend over Memorial Day – Big Hike Weekend.  Would you believe the weather on Monday and Tuesday! Not only was it overcast and drizzly, which we can hike through, but it was COLD! So our hike weekend was bleak – we didn’t get on any trail and finally salvaged the whole weekend by eating icecream in Goergetown and pizza at Beau Jo’s, then rollerblading in the Castle Rock outdoor rink.

Saved!

Maybe next week! Can’t wait to see the rockies again.

Even On Rainy Spring Days, Get Your Exercise Hiking

We have hiked in snow and rain with our kids.  It is invigorating and fun for the family. Just be prepared with the right gear. Like a hood for your baby backpack. And water repellent jackets, water resisitent hiking boots and possibly gloves (depending on how early in the season it is.)

(If you are not an experienced back country hiker, it’s not a good idea to do high elevation hikes due to unpredictable snowy spring weather).
